Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
The fourth Ultima begins a new trilogy where antagonists are seemingly absent. This comes to be known as virtue trilogy, where the people of Britannia need guidance, not protection. The hero, charged by Lord British, and with the help of various companions, sets out on a quest of purity in the ways of the virtues. One who succeeds in such a quest becomes known as the Avatar. This game came out for a number of systems, including and introducing the Sega Master System. The Nintendo version, as with Ultima: Exodus, was quite different from the other versons of game, with different graphics, music, and interface. I have recently added the Japanese NES version, Ultima Seija heno Michi. The Sega version is also quite different, and I might suggest that it is the most pleasurable one. The necessary emulators are below, so all games should be playable under DOS/Windows9X. There is also a patch which upgrades Ultima IV to 256 colour graphics with MIDI support. It also replaces the tileset, font, game, and cutscene graphics and corrects several conversation bugs within the .TLK files. I also have online, an instruction manual and walkthrough for the DOS version of this game.
